There are many general rules for installing ceramic floor tile but for floors these are specific steps.
SAFETY
1. Whenever you are installing ceramic floor tile you should always wear glass or goggles. It is because you are using a power tools such as tools for chiseling, sanding, hammering or scraping etc. And this is more important for the persons who use contact lens.
2. You can also use ear protectors because while using the noisy power tools it can damage your ears. It is because these tools crosses the noise levels that your can handle.
3. Always take care of your loose hair and the clothing also. It should not get caught in the tools. Never use your jewelry while working with these types of tools.
4. Check the blades are sharp or not because dull blade will require excessive force and it can also cause accidents.
5. Always have a first aid kit along with. Installing ceramic floor tile can be dangerous sometimes.
MATERIALS
Take the accurate measurements before ordering for the ceramic floor tile. Try to draw a plan on a paper before doing anything. It can be very helpful. Always order 5-8 percent more ceramic floor tiles than your need. It can help you at the time of emergencies. Order the tiles all at the same time because there may be difference in color in other shipment delivery.
For installing these tiles you will also need grout which comes in different colors. For example, a grout for a kitchen can be a dark grout which does not show dirt as easily as white grout. The other materials include underlayment or backer board, proper nails for underlayment, mastic, spacers, grout sealer, grout fortifier, etc.
TOOLS
There are many tools which you will need while installing a ceramic floor tile. These includes tape measure, tile cutter, tile nippers, glass cutters, combination square, framing square, notched trowel, level, hammer, rubber mallet, floor scrapper, caulking gun and caulk, chalk line, screwdriver, putty knife, or utility knife, etc.
STEPS
1. The first step is surface preparation. You will have to clear away all the things such as rugs, glass bathroom shelves, etc. Cover all the drains with some tape. By using a pry bar remove the baseboards. You will have to cut bottom of the door while installing the tile because it will increase the floor height. It can get stuck with the door.
2. The next step is floor underlayment. Staple polyethylene plastic on the top of subfloor if you are installing new underlayment. Because it will ensure protection from water penetrating down to the subfloor.
3. It is very necessary to establish the layout lines accurately. All the line should be clear in view. It should be bold and easy to see.
4. Now spread the adhesive. Never obscure your working lines while spreading the adhesives. Leave the adhesive as it is advised.
5. Now you can settle the tiles on the adhesives. Never slide the tiles. Always put it on the adhesive gently. You will also have to use spacers between the tiles for maintaining consistent lines.
6. Now the last step is cutting and trimming. Cut the tiles with a tile cutter only. And after cutting trim it with a trimmer.
By this way you can install a ceramic tile yourself.
