Can handicap people get auto insurances?
We have talked widely about direct auto insurances and their importance when driving a car. We have also told how to behave when dealing with a company, and how to shop around for the best prices, discounts and facilities when it comes to quotes and monthly payments. Yet there is a detail that we have not gone through, and it is the chance of disabled people to have car insurances. As compuquotes.com states, “there are plenty of myths circulating about auto insurance for people with disabilities. Some people believe it’s impossible to get, some that it’s prohibitively expensive”. First of all, it is obvious that if the disabled can drive, they have to be entitled to a car insurance. At that point, there is no discussion possible. Now, is it possible that they pay higher prices than the people who are not disabled? Is it fair for them to be discriminated? Of course not. I believe that it is necessary to understand that even the disabled have to have the possibility of using the car, provided they pass every test and can get out their license. In that point they are not discriminated: they have to take the test as anyone else. So why should they be discriminated when it comes to taking out a direct auto insurance policy? As mentioned in the source cited before, there are laws in United States of America that actually prohibits discrimination and guarantees protection for handicap people when it comes to them having to buy direct auto insurance. Of course, the law does legislate for all aspects of life, not only for car drivings. The only chance for insurance companies to charge the disabled with more money is that they can demonstrate that the person taking out the insurance has more risk to have an accident than any other person. This will be the only possibility for the insurance company, that has to present evidence and proof, to have the quotes higher for these people. As explained in the mentioned source, there are some disabilities, very specific, that qualify for these aspects and that can make interest rates be higher. The disabilities included in the list are for example diabetes or epilepsy, conditions that can lead to temporary seizures or health problems that can produce an attack and can lead to the driver to crash or produce an accident. It is clearly obvious that a driver suffering from epilepsy should be conscious of his or her disability and restrain himself or herself to drive in certain places. This measure has been taken by some enterprises that consider very risky the situation of having an insured person with epilepsy for a direct auto insurance, and they put the condition that these people have to drive in certain places. In some states, people with epilepsy are directly prohibited to take out a license. As stated by compuquotes.com, in the case you are diagnosed a disability, you should notify your insurance company, to let them know of your situation. If you didn’t notify, and you want to make a claim, it is very likely that you will not be listened to.
So being disabled does not impede you to drive, nor it makes you pay more money than you should. It is just a common fact to understand that, if you have some disability, you should be more careful to drive. Under no circumstances should you permit to be discriminated or allow your insurer to charge you more money in your quotes.
