1. What is a culinary art school?

A culinary art school is that oriented training school to their students in the culinary arts. These schools can appear as such: institutions or universities with areas dedicated to the kitchen.

Regarding the culinary word, is a word that is directly associated with cooking or the art of cooking, and also is associated with the kitchen or cooks.

3. The French Culinary Institute - New York. An International Reference.

Although The French Culinary Institute is not the oldest culinary art school of all, his leadership and organization, as well as his pioneering spirit, being always in the eye of the hurricane, have led to position itself as one of the best culinary art school in the world. It has one of the highest rates of employment for all its students, besides offering numerous scholarships and grants, to encourage people from very different nature, can have access to this school.

Historically, it appeared in 1984 in the Soho of New York, being its founder Dorothy Cann Hamilton.

Currently headed by an all-star line-up of distinguished Deans - all of them recognized with honours and awards. These include figures of Jacques Torres, Jacques Pépin, Alain Shaihac, Cesare Casella, among others. With pop-icons, as is Boobby Flay.

The secret of their success stems from its Total Immersion (SM) approach, an educational program led by top chefs with renowned intensive. It is articulated in the disciplines: Classic Culinary Arts, Classic Pastry Arts, and International Bread Baking.

Today, with the intention to develop future projects, coexists along with The International Culinary Center, an expanded home that belongs to the CRF.

4. Possible careers, certificates and diplomas.

A culinary art school will offer a wide range of opportunities within the profession of the kitchen. Therefore, I summarize the most common occupations offered by these schools:

Chef and Cooks: Those who prepare the food directly. There are different options: catering facilities, institutional dining, full-service restaurants, catering facilities, institutional and corporate dining, among others.

A classification within them, it could be:

Chef de Cuisine: is the executive chef in a kitchen. The one ruling the kitchen, the head of the kitchen. Although, is a term used to define the executive cooker in a location or section in the kitchen. Such us: poultry chef, desserts chef…

Sous-chef de cuisine is the one of working directly under authority of the Chef de Cuisine. He assumes the chef de cuisine role in order to schedule the kitchen, once the main chef is off-DUTTY. We can say is the second in command.

Chef de partie: is the line cook. He possesses a high level of specialization in a kitchen or line section. Directly supervised by the Sous-chef de cuisine.

Commis Chef: he is the apprentice working under the authorization and supervisation of the chef de partie. Learning station or section responsibilities. A Commis chef is a student who has completed his culinary training and education and is working at kitchens but undergoing training. This undergoing training it takes about 4 years, getting earnings according to their status level.

Kitchen assistants: they have not receive a formal training. They are working in basic tasks, such as: peeling, washing and cutting vegetables.

Food and Beverage Managers - they organize and manege all food as well as the beverage outlets in large establishments, such as, hotels.

Food and Beverage Controllers - They are in charge od the purchase, source and stock management and control of large hotels and stablishments.

Consultants: They are in charge of creating menus according to customers’ profiles and environment changes. They try to update menus towards the more fashionable standards and according to the new customers tastes, flavour and pleasures. They always work with restaurants owners.

Design Specialists - They work in the artistic and protocol side. Such as: establishing protocols kitchen, layout and design of dining room. Tables dressing, service, crockery…

5. Culinary art school grants and scholarships.

A large number of culinary art school are offering grants and scholarships. Therefore, if you are thinking to abandon your dream because of money, several possibilities exist in order to join your culinary art school.

The scholarships are provided either by the school directly, or from special grants or trusts set up by some patrons.

Moreover, there are two sorts of Scholarships:

Tuition waiver: they can be as high as 50% or 75% of the fees, amounting to even $ 20000

Cash awards: they can range from $ 500 to $ 5000, or even more.

The scholarships used to be reviewed by a committee of professionals and academics from the school. And still are reviewed in this way. They consider past experience, performance of the student, academic files, but illusion and dreams are considered too when the financial status of the student is seeking for an internship.
