Measuring the interpersonal skills of an individual is a form of employee evaluation. People spend most of their time in interacting with others; they act as connective tissues and help as to hold the subparts of the organization together. But there are expectations together. The social relations between the people are understood and improved by a type of analysis called the transactional analysis and it forms tool of employee evaluation.
Transactional analysis originated by Eric Berne views human personality as consisting of three basic concepts – child, adult & parent ego states corresponding to Freud’s Id, Ego & Superego. These are the measures of employee evaluation.
Berne maintains that the Freudian concepts are hypothetical constructs but his concepts are phenomenological realities it, actual psychological states which can be observed through a persons speech, tone of voice, facial expressions etc.
Transactional analysis refers to methods of understanding interpersonal behaviour. When people interact there is a social transaction in which one responds to another, the study of these transactions between people is called as transactional analysis.
Ego States:
1. Parent Ego :
It is the attitudes and behaviour of emotionally significant people who serve as parent figure when an individual was a child. Each individual has his unique parent ego state is a mixture of helpfulness and hurtfulness. It is similar to super ego.
2. Adult Ego :
It is bases upon reasoning seeking and providing information. It is based on rationality. It is similar to ego.
3. Child Ego :
Characteristics of child ego include creativity, conformity, depression, anxiety. The child ego characterized by non-logical and immediate actions which result in immediate satisfaction.
TRANSACTIONS
1. Complimentary transactions :

The S & R patterns forms one ego state to another is parallel. Thus a predicted response is got from other persons.

It is crossed transactions and may occur when S & R lines are not parallel. No expected response.
Uses of transactional analysis in employee evaluation:
1. Developing positive thinking :
It brings positive approach towards life. It brings a clear change from the negative feelings to positive feelings. Such a change from negative attitude to positive attitude is a source of psychic energy. Thus this application enhances the trust and credibility felt towards the organization which is essential for good employee relations.
2. Interpersonal effectiveness :
It improves interpersonal relationship by providing understanding of ego states of persons involved in interaction. It gives details of complementary transactions which is helpful in problem solving. The effectiveness of managers may be able to analyze transactions with employees in organization. It is helpful in analyzing the ego states of both parties. It helps in better understanding of them selves & improved interpersonal relations will bring effectiveness to the organization.
3. Motivation :
It can be applied in motivation where it helps in satisfying human needs. Managers can enrich their jobs by positive strokes.
4. Organizational Development :
It applies a humanistic value system to work behaviour & reorientation of mans thinking and behaviour towards work organization. The major goal of OD is to fight the past in the present & to choose freely the future. It can help in OD process, by giving positive communication, it helps to solve personal & family problems and to develop own communication problem.
These are some of the ways of employee evaluation.
