Employee assessment is made through the intelligence of an individual. Intelligence is the adjustment or adaptation of the individual to his total environment and /or his mental adaptability to new problems and new situations in life. Employee assessment is made on the grounds of intelligence. An Intelligent person is one who is capable of learning more extensively and easily from his own experience. Intelligence is the ability of an individual to carry out abstract thinking for solving numerous problems the individuals face in their life.
Intelligence Quotient (IQ)
IQ = MA/CA X 100
MA – Mental Age
CA – Chronological Age
When IQ > 100 (better than average intelligence)
When IQ < 100 (lower than average intelligence)
IQ is an overall measure of intelligence. IQ is same throughout the age with less fluctuation.
INTELLIGENCE TESTS
Employee assessment is made in the following ways:
(1)Stanford-Binet tests and the Weschler Scales:
This test is world famous and is used for adult age groups. It is done on single individuals and requires persons trained in their testing procedures. Though they give an overall IQ score they are rarely used due to time constraint.
(2)The Otis tests :
It is also called as Otis self administering tests of mental ability which are available in two forms, for school / college going students and adults going to some industries. It is been found that it acts as a screening instrument. It is very much useful with lower level jobs.
(3)The Wonderlic Personnel Test :
It is an abridged adaptation of Otis test. It is a quick test requiring only 12 minutes time to answer and yet can give results which are comparable to the original Otis Tests. Items of this test identifies between a poor worker and good worker. Details of score are given in the test manual. Tests prove successful in selection of clerical workers and employee assessment.
(4)Chicago Tests :
It is multi factor test of primary mental abilities and is develop by L.L.Thrustone. The factors have been isolated using the factor analysis, a statistical technique. The tests are available in a single booklet and it takes about two hours for completer administration.
The different primary mental abilities are
Verbal Meaning
Spatial Perception. (Ability to visualize objects in 2 or 3 dimensions)
Numerical ability
Reasoning-ability
Word fluency
(5)Differential aptitude test (D.A.T)
It is slightly different in conception but measures important abilities like verbal reasoning, mechanical reasoning, abstract reasoning, numerical ability, clerical speed, language usage etc. This test is used in industrial selection.
(6)General Aptitude Test Battery (G.A.T.B)
It is constructed in a manner that it can test all of person’s vocational abilities. In jobs like office workers, mill supervisors, stenographers, sales people etc shows a good relationship with intelligence / proficiency. Many jobs requiring strength, mechanical operations will show little or nil relations with intelligence.
Most of the MNC’s and companies adopt campus placements as their major source of recruitment. The first step in eliminating the candidates will be an aptitude test followed by a personality test. These tests are world renowned and provide a lot of help in decision making for managers. These tests are a means to judge persons quantitatively converting their qualitative nature into measurable terms, which in turn help in employee assessment.
