The meaning of architecture can be many things such as a process, documentation or a profession. And in process, architecture means a work of designing, constructing structures or other buildings by a person or a machine. The basic purpose of architecture is to provide shelter. In brief we can say that architecture is a person who designs the total environment of a construction work. If we look upon architecture as a profession then it is the role of those people who provide architectural services. And if we look upon it as documentation then it define the structure and behavior of a building that has to be constructed by a medium of drawing on a paper.
The basic work of architecture is to provide the shelter needs of public either individual or in groups such as school, colleges, churches, etc. For doing a construction the architecture has to deal with several things such as mass, space, texture, structure, light, materials, shadow, or volume.
Other than the design process through the senses also you can experience the architecture which further gives rise to aural, visual, olfactory and tactile architecture. Each with its own language the design process of a space is distinctly separate views. Architectural works are assumed as a work of arts as well as political symbol also. At some extent historical civilizations are also known because of their architectural works. For example the building of pyramids, Taj Mahal, and the Roman Colosseum, these all are cultural symbols.
Architects are those who practice this profession of architecture. An architect is that person who provides architectural services. The architecture profession includes various things such as planning, designing and oversight of a building’s construction. There was no professionalized architect till the end of 19th century.
De architectura is the earliest written work on the subject of architecture. It was written by a Roman architecture whose name was Vitruvius in the early 1st century CE. And according to this architect a good building always consist of three things and these are:
1. Durability: It should stand perfectly and long lasting. Here durability means good condition of building and the materials used should be excellent quality.
2. Utility: The purpose of the construction should be fulfilled. The construction should be used by every person and it serves some purpose also.
3. Beauty: This is the most important one because without this no one would have remembered the architects of the past. It should be delightful and it should raise the spirits of the people.
During the period of Renaissance there was no dividing line between an artist, an engineer and an architect. The difference between these people started emerging when knowledge in scientific field was increased and due to the rise of new materials and technology. At the same time a new class of architect was emerging called as ‘gentleman architect’ and these gentleman architect deals with the rich person only. And then after the First World War a different class and style of architect emerged which mainly do the work as post-war social and economic order.
